MEET THE PERSON BEHIND THE SITE

Hi, I’m Matthew.

I’m a software engineer, landlord, entrepreneur, dad, chocolatier, and pilot in training.

Self-Taught Pilot is where my love of building useful things meets my determination to understand aviation from the ground up.

WHY I BUILT SELF-TAUGHT PILOT

I’m learning in public—and bringing you along.

I’m building Self-Taught Pilot as part of my own aviation learning journey. When I need a better way to understand something, I build an interactive experience for myself, then share it here so other learners can use it too.

Flash cards and quizzes have their place, but they aren’t enough for me. I want to take learning to the next level with working diagrams, visual challenges, simulations, source material, and experiences that make us reason through what a pilot would actually see and do.

Behind the scenes, the fuel mixture is roughly coffee, ADHD, and OCD—with occasional traces of actual sleep.

LIFE OUTSIDE THE COCKPIT

A lot of interests, one common thread

I’m a software engineer, a landlord, an entrepreneur, a dad, and a chocolatier.

WHERE THIS IS GOING

Come learn with me

I’m continuing to expand the source-linked question bank, convert more of the Pilot’s Handbook to genuinely useful HTML, and build activities that develop applied judgment—not just recall.

I’m a pilot in training, not a CFI or DPE. This site supplements—not replaces—good flight instruction, current FAA publications and regulations, aircraft POHs and AFMs, or sound aeronautical decision-making.
