AIRCRAFT AND ENGINES

Low-cost planes

Discuss affordable aircraft, realistic purchase budgets, operating costs, condition, and value.

BudgetBirdS

A low purchase price can hide an expensive first year. What costs do you include before calling an aircraft genuinely affordable?

PrebuyPeteS

Replying to BudgetBird

A thorough prebuy and complete records are worth budgeting for. The cheapest airframe can become the most expensive choice if deferred work appears after purchase.

I compare annual fixed costs, expected maintenance reserves, fuel, and storage before performance. A plane that can stay flying is more useful than a bargain that sits.

CalendarCaseyS

Would you rather buy a flying airplane near the top of the budget or leave a large reserve for the first annual and surprises? The reserve seems less exciting, but probably more realistic.

ReserveRuthS

I would keep the reserve. A clean prebuy lowers uncertainty but does not eliminate tires, hoses, batteries, avionics work, or something the first annual uncovers.
